I ran across a good article today that explain some details of SEO (search engine optimization). For those website owners who want to know a bit about how SEO works, check it out:
Crawl, Index, Rank, Repeat: A Tactical SEO Framework (searchenginewatch.com)
SEO can be boiled down to three core elements, or functions, in the current era of Google: crawling time (discovery), indexation time (which also includes filtering), and ranking time (algorithmic).
He has some good points. One I like is that search engines are in business to give the best results to people that are searching. I've said that for a while, too, and it makes total sense. Think like a search engine. Be the best result. Make your website an authority on a topic. How do you do that? Two things: content and inbound links. It's really that simple.
I think the tough thing about SEO is all the work that's required. There's really no secret or trick. There are some great tools to know about - so I guess that part could be a secret since they do save time / money. SEO can be a full time job because of all the repetitive work that is involved. That's why people hire SEO companies - well, for that and their knowledge. If you go to the experts, you get expert advice that saves time and money.
If you're not blogging on your website, then what are you waiting for? You need to be constantly adding content. That would be the first step I'd suggest to anyone. Another first step or second step would be to get the website SEO ready.
There's on-site SEO and off-site SEO. You need to do both. I've said this before... having a website is like having a phone number. Just because you have one, doesn't mean people will call. Just putting up a website will not get you traffic. People have to know about it. Thank God for search engines that find and index your website.
