I just had a phone call with a client and thought I'd blog about it quickly.

We're planning a slight redesign for them. They're really happy with the design we made for them years ago, so they don't want to tweak it much. We're just going to make it wider for them, move some thing around for them on the home page and give them the Joomla 1.5 upgrade.

He mentioned that they get a lot of compliments on their website. I told him that we just hope the website matches the type of service and quality that we know they provide, which is true. They are really service oriented and do provide outstanding quality - the type of client we love. His customers tell them that they made the decision to choose him over his competition because of their website. Then he said something really interesting.

He said that customers even look at their employee applications that they have posted on the website. Yeah, they do - seriously. They comment about how it looks like they really demand a lot when hiring, which really show the commitment to quality offered. I like that. I haven't thought too much about how something like an online application can be for customer service but yeah, it is. That's something to think about.

So what with your business are you discerning about? What makes your business stand out? Is it your hiring process, like the example above? Is it how you do follow up to make sure everything worked out right? Are you fast? Are you accurate? Are you always available? What is it? There may be a number of things but what's the one thing that you don't see your competition doing? Whatever it is, use it. Make it stand out and then you will. Put it on your website because that's where people are doing research.

If your website design doesn't match your business, then stop what you're doing and change it. Really. It's that important. One phrase we often say here is, "if your website was a shirt, would you wear it?" If you spend all your money on the sign outside your building or your lobby and then skimp on your website, you're missing the boat and losing business. People are going to your competition. The Web is everywhere now and people are going there first.

So make your website stand out by having great design that's easy to update. Put your best foot forward on your site and show what you do best - scream it if you have to. You'll get the sales you need.
