I just took a look at a site and they're using one word keywords in their meta tags and they're really general, too - like "sport" and so forth and there was one misspelled keyword, which didn't look like it was that way on purpose. That's sloppy and probably not worth having meta keywords.

What you want is multi-word keywords. We call them "long tail keywords" which means they're specific keywords. These target the traffic you want because you will be found in search results and people will be coming from search engines to your website. That kind of traffic is gold. They're specifically looking for what you're offering, they come to you and your website hopefully does it's job and sells to that specific audience.

It's really amazing if you think about it. With what other medium than the Web can you do that? With TV and radio, the audience is still pretty broad. Highway billboards, also broad reach. When you show up as the thing someone is searching for, that's pure gold. There's your chance. Are you taking advantage of it?

So using one-word keywords instead of multi-word keyword phrases (which we in the industry also call a "keyword" even though there is more than one word, by the way) is one way to help match your website with what people are searching for.

Another big factor is content. If you think you have enough, then double it. I do keyword research all the time and I'm just amazed at the sites that have skimpy content on their site and still rank well. They're just barely hanging on, if you ask me. It's really easy for someone else who has an established website that ranks a little lower to just add more content and inbound links and easily get ranked above the first site. So easy that it's unbelievable.

The way I look at it is, there are more and more websites launching everyday. It's so easy to do now, right? And there are still only 10 top results. So it's going to get harder and harder to get up there. For sure. Get up there now while you can - while it's still pretty easy. That will not be the case in 5 years, I guarantee it. If you don't take advantage of it now, you're... missing a huge opportunity (I almost said "stupid" there - oops, I just did). :-)

Work on your website or get someone that will!
