I saw this today on Search Engine Watch and it gives some important advice about link building:

High-Value Link Building is Hard Work

Backlinking your competitors and building a mailing list for all the sites that link to them, and then sending out mass mailings is the big no-no here.

...

After all, forum spam, blog spam, and WordPress template spam is pretty cheap, but you aren't going to get anything authoritative that way. The other factor that must be central in your mind: one authoritative link can potentially be worth 10,000 times more than one of those blog spam links.

Basically... if it were easy, everyone would be doing it... and that proves itself here, too. Everyone has already done the easy way of building links and since everyone can't be at the top of searches, only the ones that are doing more than the "easy way" are at the top.

To be at the top, it takes work. You can do it yourself or hire someone who's more efficient at it to do it for you. It's a win-win.
