It's very important to keep building incoming links to your website. You never know when a few that you have out there will cease to exist. When building links, you should think short and long term. Here's an article that mentions a strategy that's more long term or more "ground floor" you could say:

Don't Overlook These Link Building Opportunities

People often pass over new sites since they have few inbound links and no PageRank. The thinking is, they're worthless for link development because they have few inbound links. In reality, if a new site has a passionate owner, or is from a publisher with a history of success, it can be a goldmine.

Over time, that site will gain momentum and attract quality links. It's much easier to get links from a new site than one that's already successful. Get in on the ground floor and build a relationship with the site owner. That could lead to many more links down the road.

And don't forget pages that don't yet have a visible Google PageRank - getting links on them is still good. Google's PageRank is just a glimpse of what Google thinks of a site - not what's totally going on in those Googleplexes.

Again, don't get those deals where your website submitted to 1000 or 100 or even 50 sites at once. That could really hurt you later on. Good old doing it by hand is the best way. It'll take some work (and time) if you do it yourself - or you can hire an SEO company (cough... Webstix) to help you out.
