Website Redesign
"With our previous website, we seldom received comments, positive or negative, but ever since January of 2008 when Webstix got our new site up and running, it's positive feedback galore! Everyone at Webstix is a pleasure to work with and while they could add to heir own bottom line by handling our simple changes they instead train us on how to maintain our own site. This knowledge allows us to keep our site fresh by making changes on the fly. End result…. Our website looks better than ever!"

Google updated PageRank in the Google Toolbar on New Year's Eve (12/31/08) for their Q4 update in 2008. It doesn't seem like a big update but there were some changes - especially for new websites.

I'm beginning to not get really excited about what Google shows as PageRank in the Google Toolbar since it's just a glimpse into how Google ranks websites. You can tell more about how your site ranks with other ways - like doing searches.

Google PageRank Update on New Year’s Eve

Sure, the PageRank which is shown on the Google Toolbar is not an accurate indicator of how Google ranks or values a site, and is only on of many factors which goes into a live and real Google PageRank, but it’s still some sort of indicator, and will always be so while it’s still around.

So although PageRank is not a great, great tool, it's still what people see if they have the Google Toolbar installed - so it means something... especially if you're a website development company and your clients are looking at PageRank.

PageRank Update On New Years Eve

As we've discussed previously, toolbar PageRank values can be a few months old, and can also be different from the live values Google is using right at the moment. Still, this update should provide some popularity insights for new sites that have been working hard to improve their rankings.

I think we're starting to enter into an era where it's going to be harder to get ranked well. We've had it easy for a long time and it'll still be easy to get ranked well for some keywords - especially longer keyphrases or keyphrases with geographic locations in then - but I think that time is ending and it's going to start to get much harder. Anyone who wants to rank well will need to put in a lot of time working on it or pay a website development firm or SEO company for their time to do it (which can help the business owner work on developing their own business instead of being a SEO).

One more related story:

PR data in WMT is Useless said 74 respondents or 56.49%

Again, the best data is just doing searches and seeing where your website ranks. Google's search engine results pages (SERPs) are updated every few days. It's all about the numbers... are you getting traffic on your website? Is your website converting its visitors into sales? Is your website working for you?

You only get out of something what you put into it. Launching your website does not get you instant traffic just like getting a phone number for your business does not make the phone ring. You need to advertise your website and get it into Google the smart way. You need incoming links from website directories that relate to your website and also from other websites that relate to your business (be linked on a page that relates to your business). You might email 50 website owners and only get 1-2 links but that's what you have to do. It's work. If it were easy to get ranked well, then everyone would be - which means nobody would be... so that's why it takes work.
