I saw a stat posted that 69% of the people using the Web today still don't know what Twitter is or get it. I honestly have to say that I was in that group at the beginning of this year. Like David Letterman, I didn't get what all these people were doing following each other. Why would I want to micro-blog my life and who cares about it?

What I've found out is that using Twitter is very interesting if you're following people that use it. I personally follow other people I found that are into web design and marketing and they've posted links of some very cool things that I wouldn't have know about otherwise. How I got to know them was by the people I was following re-tweeting ("RT" in Twitter lingo) other people's posts. I thought that post ("tweet") was good and decided to follow that original poster/tweeter.

For business purposes, you can set up a business Twitter account and follow other companies, including potential customers. Often, good Twitter etiquette is that you want to follow people that are following you - but you don't have to do that all the time, really. And then you want to post things often. One way we (Webstix) is using Twitter is to just have blog posts (like this one) automatically sent to Twitter so that whenever we blog, we're creating an interesting Twitter post. I blog a few times a week, so we're creating posts on Twitter. I can add in other, shorter thoughts and ideas that are just on Twitter whenever I want to as well.

So, in a nutshell... Twitter is networking!

Here's a video I found that explains it pretty well on the personal side of things, check it out:

Happy Weekend!
