Ok, honestly I haven't really caught the social networking bug yet. My brother works at a company that's really into it and we're getting clients asking about it. I do know it's a great way to get people interested in your company or brand - if you're the right kind of company. A company selling industrial trash compactors might not have a huge fan base... that much is true (sorry, Ryan). But for other websites out there, things like Twitter and Facebook can work really well - provided that you have the resources to do it well. Some companies devote teams of staff to managing Twitter and Facebook - it's that big of a deal.

So here's what looks like a good 3 part story on the basics of Twitter. Check it out:

Twitter 101, Part 1 (searchenginewatch.com)

My Twitter account is: twitter.com/tcstix but I haven't used it a whole lot and it's more for personal micro-blogging than business stuff.

I've been using Facebook for quite a while (who hasn't?) but mainly for personal use. I did start one group for a website we own to see how it worked. It works great but again, you have to take the time to maintain it and make it an active thing. As I always say, "you only get out of it what you put into it."

Then there's social bookmarking. Yes, you can get good traffic with StumbleUpon but it's not targeted traffic - just surfers. You'll get really low conversions. The same happens with Digg unless your site is really aimed at that market (tech/geek).

So check out that article above. I'll be reading along, too.

-Tony
