It's like you can't even use a safe web browser nowadays!

Germany and France have issued warnings to stop using Internet Explorer because of a major security hole. This hole had something to do with the recent attacks on Google in China.

There's been a movement for years to get people to stop using Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), which has been dubbed the worst web browser ever. IE7 was a fix but still not great. Most people have IE8 installed and are using it as their default web browser. If you are using IE6 or IE7, please discontinue using it immediately! You are very vulnerable to attacks when visiting certain web sites. If you are using IE8, then please be sure to get the latest upgrade.

Germany, France Warn Users Of Internet Explorer (online.wsj.com)

German and French officials warned people against using Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Internet Explorer web browser because of a security hole in the software hackers are believed to have exploited in recent attacks on Google Inc. (GOOG) and other Internet companies.

...A Microsoft spokeswoman reiterated an earlier recommendation by Microsoft that Internet users lessen the risk of the security threat by upgrading to the latest version of its browser, Internet Explorer 8, which she said includes security precautions...

Microsoft has recommended that users of the older Internet Explorer 6 software adjust the security settings in the browser to "high" so that the software prompts them before running potentially harmful programming code on Web sites.

Even the Firefox web browser does get attacked and this happens more when you have a lot of plugins installed. The authors of some Firefox plugins don't update their software enough, which makes you vulnerable. The most secure way to run Firefox is with no plugins installed.

With computers - whether your home or office computer or even the server that your website runs on, the software needs to stay up to date. We do this a lot with the web hosting servers that we run for our clients. Cyber attacks are out there - there's a war going on in the online world, so make sure you're safe and protected - they're out there!

I tend to use Firefox because it performs better than IE. IE nags the user with useless popups about security and, typical of Microsoft, expects the user to know whether it's "okay to continue?". But, typically, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera all load pages much more quickly than IE. The only snag is when a website uses one of Microsoft's proprietary ActiveX programs. I won't allow my computer to install Silver Light.

And that's how I see it. ~ Sage
