I was on the phone with a client last week. We're working on their design and they were considering removing the blog because they didn't know what to blog about. I strongly encouraged her NOT to do that. Blogs are so important. They get you so much traffic and are just a great place to casually talk about your company or industry. Some things I've written:
Sometimes your blog posts get picked up and you get all kinds of unexpected traffic:
So where do you get ideas and content for your blog posts? Some ideas:
- Subscribe to daily or weekly e-newsletters in your industry - even from your competition.
- Get on Twitter and write about articles people tweet (Doing Viral Marketing / Social Media Marketing)
- Read the newspaper / online news.
- Visit your competitors and write about what they're doing wrong (maybe not them specifically - that's up to you)
- Blog about new products and services you offer.
- Blog about old products and services you offer.
- Blog about frequently asked questions you get.
- Blog about funny things that happened to you (interject some personal stuff once in a while).
Just have fun doing it. Blogs are casual and a great way to give your company and website some personality. And then don't forget to auto-Tweet your blog.
