I just got off the phone with a client today and wrote up an email. Below is an excerpt from that email, which I'd like to share because it seems to fit what most of our clients want. This client, in particular, has a website (Joomla) that was set up for him by someone he knows but now he doesn't know what to do with it to make the website successful:

To recap what we talked about, it sounds like you'd like a proposal from us about what we think we would do for your website. We would be happy to do that for you. I gave some general suggestions on the phone, which were:

1. Technical Work - we'd want to do a few things so that the website had a good chance of doing well technically with SEO. There are some components that we know work well and will give your site a little boost. These have to do with title tags, how URLs look, site maps, tags, etc.

2. Community Functions - then we'd want to give your website some tools to help it foster a community. This is things like a comment manager so that people can leave comments and give you tools to manage comments on articles that come in. Other ones are some Facebook tools so that people can post your articles to their Facebook wall. There may be other tools we'd suggest as well.

3. Content Goals - this will depend mostly on you. Posting 400 words a day would be a first goal that I'd like to see you get to. You'll want to make sure that the copy you write falls within your site's theme so that you don't get off topic. This gives your content cohesion and better tells Google what topics your site covers. If it's all over the map without any focus, Google won't know what to do with it. We have a copywriter that we can help assist with this if you want.

4. Ongoing SEO and Maintenance - I think optimizing the site monthly would work well for you. Content has to sit on the site a little while to see what Google thinks of it but once that is done, articles can then be optimized so that you rank higher. You might also need a little maintenance done every month when there are Joomla upgrades or other things that need to be done.

We get many clients like this. They want to have a place on the Web for their business or organization that's easy to update, works well (is successful) and they want to partner with someone who cares about them. We're that. I believe that with any effort, you only get out of it what you put into it. Our most successful clients are the ones who really work on their sites all the time.

Content is King

Content, by far, is the most important thing with any website. For us, it's definitely the most difficult thing to get from our clients, which is why we offer copy writing services. Thinking just throwing up a website, writing copy once and then leaving it will make you successful just is not right. It takes work. If you want to be ahead of your competition, you have to work at it. Publishing on the Web is so cheap that I really don't get why people don't do it as often as they should. If you're not a writer, that's fine. Hire someone who is (we have some). We can make websites that work very well technically but if they're not used, then only half of the work was done.

Ok, sorry for the rant but it's true - content is king. There are some easy ways to get content. I get e-newsletters all the time and quote articles that I like. That's one way. Another is to post content that will get people talking - when that happens, they write the content for you in the form of comments. It's a beautiful thing - I've seen it work. So don't get turned off and discouraged if content seems like it's too difficult to get. We can help.
