One more Friday post for you...
Here's a question I just was asked by a prospective client - and it's a good question... he's looking at a discount web hosting company that has a site builder for a very low price. So the question is what are the advantages and disadvantages of going with a company like that.
Here is my response:
Well, if you want a site that other people have and you don't want to benefit from good SEO practices and an experienced company, then go with this. Really, as with anything... you get what you pay for. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. This definitely holds true in this case.
If it really was super easy and cheap to get a great website and be found, I think we and our whole industry would be out of business. As it turns out, we're in business. :-)
So yeah, like anything, you get what you pay for:
- Do you go to the $8 hair cut chain and expect the same thing as the $40 hair styling place? No, you're getting an $8 hair cut, sorry.
- Do you buy the $10 dress shirt at a discount department store that you always have to iron and wears out after 3 months or get the $60 dress shirt that doesn't need ironing, looks great and lasts for years?
- Do you buy the used Ford for $1000 that you always have to repair or the $17,000 certified Honda used car that lasts 10 years with no major problems?
Speaking of cars, earlier this year, I thought I'd save some dough and get my car's heater fixed at a local place instead of the dealer. I was wrong. It took them 4 hours to first find then problem, which was an $80 part. So instead of paying $400 for that work, I could have paid just $80 for the part and some shop time (so maybe $160) at the Acura dealer who would know right away what the problem was and I might have even had a free, nice, new loaner car for the day. I learned my lesson there. You sometimes spend a lot more with the discount place... you typically get what you pay for in life.
