When we work on your shopping cart for your website, there are a number of things we need to know about. One of them is how to handle sales tax.
First of all, you should consult your accountant regarding if you need to charge sales tax and at what rate. In Wisconsin, it's 5% with some counties adding another .05% on and some cities adding some tax as well. Technically, you're supposed to charge sales tax for each county in the state and then collect and report it. That's why we say you need to consult your accountant. They can tell you what to do.
What if We Need Tax by County?
Typically, shoping cart software can charge different rates per state. If you need it by county (or by city), that can be done but it's not typically a feature of the cart and may not be a feature included in the set up of your cart. It might cost extra to do this but we want you to know that it is possible. The cart would need to have different rates per county (you would have to provide this) and then have a pulldown during the check out process where people would have to select which county they reside in. Again, let us know if you will require this.
Tax by State
If you have offices in different states, you will probably be required to collect sales tax for each of those states. Again, most shopping cart platforms can easily handle tax collection by state since the customer's state is part of their address.
